FAQ
The House
What is Leafless Ashes?
Candles, oils and objects for the occult and the darker home. Everything is made by hand in Chicago by Giselle, our founder and an occultist, and finished through her ritualization process before it ships. Small batches.
What does "ritualized" mean?
Every candle and oil goes through Giselle's ritualization process before it leaves us. It's the last step in making each piece. What you bring to it after that is your business.
Is everything vegan?
Yes. No animal-derived ingredients, in anything.
Do you offer readings, rituals or other services?
No. Leafless Ashes is product-only. What's in the shop is what we make.
The Candles
What's the difference between the shape candles and the herbal candles?
Shape candles are sculptural: skulls, reapers, spirals, ghosts. Each one is hand-poured and hand-carved, with every small detail worked by hand. Herbal candles are 12 oz, hand-poured in coconut wax, and each is built around a single herb.
Are the candles scented?
Shape candles are unscented. Herbal candles carry their herb and our signature fragrance blend. If you're sensitive to fragrance, go with the shapes.
Will my candle look exactly like the photo?
Close, not identical. Shape candles are carved by hand, so small details vary from piece to piece. No two are quite alike.
Should I burn a shape candle or keep it?
Either. Light it, or keep it unlit as an object. Once it burns, the carving goes with it.
How do I burn my candles safely?
- Trim the wick to about 1/4 inch before every burn.
- Never leave a burning candle unattended.
- Keep it away from children, pets, drafts and anything flammable.
- Burn it upright on a heat-safe surface. Shape candles drip and pool, so set them on a plate or tray.
- Stop burning a jar candle when about 1/2 inch of wax is left.
The Oils
How do I use the body & hair oils?
Work a few drops into the mid-lengths and ends of your hair, or massage into skin. Each bottle is 20 ml.
What's in them?
Most of our oils pair one herb with camelina, avocado, olive, aloe vera and rosehip oils. Each oil's ingredients are on its product page. Read them before you buy.
I have sensitive skin or allergies. Can I use them?
Check the ingredients first. Patch test a small amount on your inner arm and wait 24 hours before using more. If it irritates, stop. For external use only. If you're pregnant, nursing or under medical care, ask your doctor first.
